Teaching and Learning of English at St. Joseph’s Catholic Primary School, Barking
Since the ability to read opens the door to knowledge, we put great emphasis on literacy skills at St. Joseph’s. Children have access to a wide range of materials, using a structured approach, so that all children get the assistance they need, at each stage of development. Children are encouraged to listen, to read and to write in a variety of ways, to develop the appropriate vocabulary appreciation of ideas and an attitude which leads to confidence, enjoyment and enthusiasm for language and literacy. Our aim in language teaching is for every child leaving our school, to be able to read fluently and with understanding; able to write and enjoy writing; and to be articulate and at ease with people they meet.
Literacy is taught daily, in classes. The structure of lessons includes an introduction, period of main teaching and discussion, child centred, individual activities and review. The content of all lessons follows the key areas as outlined within the National Curriculum 2014.
