Mathematics at St Joseph’s
Within key stage 1 and 2, mathematics is taught daily, in classes or as in year 5 and 6, streamed ability groups. The structure of lessons includes an introduction, period of main teaching and discussion, child centred, individual activities and review. The content of all lessons follows the key areas as outlined within the National Curriculum 2014.
Areas of study include:
Number – Number and place value
Addition and subtraction
Multiplication and division
Fractions, decimals and percentages
Ratio and proportion (Year 6)
Algebra (Year 6)
Position and Direction
Teachers use the Collins ‘Busy Ant’ scheme to ensure that all lessons are differentiated, in order to meet the individual needs of the children that they teach. Please see the individual year group overviews for the content covered.
The concepts of mathematics are also covered in other curriculum lessons, such as geography, science, art and design technology.
Problem solving is an important skill that children need to develop in mathematics, therefore one lesson a week is devoted to this.
